NOTE: This is a non-surgical clinic. RAVS veterinary teams will be working with local personnel to provide door-to-door wellness and sick animal services in a specific focus area as part of an intensive community health project

VOLUNTEER NEEDS:  (PRIOR RAVS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED)
Returning volunteers of all types are encouraged to apply (veterinarians, technicians/assistants, veterinary and technician students and support volunteers). Volunteers must have participated in at least one prior RAVS field clinic.

ARRIVAL:
We will meet in the parking lot at the designated meeting location and caravan to the clinic site as a group.  You must be ready to depart together at the time indicated.  Please have vehicles fueled and any rest stop or shopping needs complete before the meet time as we will be departing promptly for the clinic site.  If you are flying into the area, you should plan to fly in the night before to avoid missing your team due to flight changes or other delays. You will be responsible for coordinating your own ground transportation throughout the clinic.

DEPARTURE:
February 9 will be the last working day of the trip. Departure time will be dependent on case load and community needs, but we can expect to leave the community early evening on February 9.  Flights may be booked out anytime February 10. You will be responsible for arranging your own accommodations prior to and after the arrival and departure times.

ACCOMODATIONS:
Sleeping arrangements will involve indoor camping in the clinic building or another local building provided by the community. It is important to pack anything you need to sleep comfortably. Details on lodging arrangements will be provided to team members as available.

CLINIC INFORMATION:
You will be part of a team bringing quality veterinary medical services to the reservation of the San Carlos Apache Tribe in Arizona. We will be providing 4 days of wellness and sick animal services via neighborhood outreach and targeted home visits.  We will be working outdoors under a variety of conditions.

You will gain hands-on experience in physical examination, medical management and prevention of infectious diseases, providing quality care with limited resources and the art of client communication. Infectious disease, tick-borne illness and other issues are serious animal and human health concerns for the San Carlos community, exacerbated by systemic poverty and a lack of access to essential veterinary care. Be prepared to possibly see and learn about tick-borne diseases (ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever), parvovirus, canine distemper, Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis), sarcoptic mange, and a range of injuries and traumas (hit-by-car, animal bite injuries and snake bites are all common). You will also experience the beauty of Apache land and culture, build relationships with our amazing community members and make a difference in the lives of hundreds of animals in need. CONTINUING EDUCATION:
This clinic is not eligible for RACE approved CE credit. Clinical training and orientations will focus on provision of intensive wellness care, assessment and treatment of various infectious diseases and injuries and provision of high quality basic veterinary services with limited resources.
